Chrysler Outboard Parts by Mercury
During 1978 Chrysler adopted the method of assigning model numbers that had a year represented in them (much like the later to be used Force numbers). Some models created that year were still old style model numbers, but the new model numbers can be interpreted as follows:
example: 42H8D = 4-horsepower, "2" Series, made in Hartford Wisconsin in 1978. "D" modification
example: 1159B9C = 115-horsepower, "9" Series, made in Barrie Ontario Canada in 1979, "C" modification
*Prefix | HP | **Series Number | Series Letter (A-Z) | Year Indicator | Modification Suffix |
---|---|---|---|---|---|

*Note: Only used in some 1979 models 70HP-up
**Note: Series Numbers differ in meaning from year to year and HP to HP, but model options such as shaft length, Cubic Displacement, etc. may be indicated in the Series Number. IE. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are all long shaft models with various other attribute differences.
If you have an engine made from 1978 - 1984 and are still unsure of your engine year, or if you have a Chrysler engine from 1965 - 1978 refer to the Chrysler serial number year chart. Search for your model number by pressing CTRL+F to find the corresponding year.
