You've seen how our Smart Tabs perform on a boat. Now let's take a look at why they work better than any other trim tab or foil on the market, even higher priced electronically controlled tabs.

The most common complaints we hear from small and medium sized boat owners are excessive bow rise on takeoff, getting on plane quickly and porpoising these challenges limit the maximum performance from your boat as well as your overall enjoyment.

Let's take a look at each of these more closely. Your boat has an access point or the point at which it pivots in the water. The ideal access point is mid ship. As the stern weight increases the axis point shifts towards the stern. The more stirred weight, the farther back the access point and the higher the bow arise. Add in the thrust of your motor and you lengthen the amount of time it will take to get on plane. The key is in balancing your boat without compromising performance.

So how do Smart Tabs balance the hull without sacrificing performance? Smart Tabs create extra Stern lift intuitively they increase the running surface and adjust the hull design to compensate for changes in sea conditions, weight and speed on a continuous basis. It's an active system.

At slower speeds, Smart Tabs are fully deployed offering the greatest amount of lift. As your boat accelerates the taps automatically adjust angle and retract in direct relationship to the forces on them created by the water pressure and sea conditions.

There are some experts who feel that to plane quicker requires more horsepower. This is a myth. To get on plane requires whole balance not throwing more horsepower at it.

Without Smart Tabs, typical power rise will be about 15 to 17 degrees regardless of the motorsports power. You see, during acceleration your motor is working to push the boat up hill in order to get on plane. The acceleration is slow and forces the motor to labor.

With Smart Tabs installed to create balance, bow rises minimised which allows the boat to accelerate with less resistance. From a power standpoint you'll require less than half the horsepower from the motor to get on plane resulting in more horsepower for quicker acceleration.

The result time –s to plane is significantly reduced. Visibility over the bow is increased and your fuel economy is improved because your motor is pushing the boat forward not struggling to climb uphill.

Once you're on plane, if your boat feels like a bucking bronco then you're experiencing the phenomenon commonly known as porpoising. Porpoising is the bouncing reaction of the boat bow rising and falling as you're cruising. To eliminate this annoying and uncomfortable bouncing, there needs to be enough Stern lift to hold the bow down.

A common remedy to reduce porpoising is to trim the motor down so that the prop angle is facing up to lift the stern and hold the bow down. This is a costly mistake resulting in prop slip which decreases pro efficiency. You get the maximum efficiency when your prop is perpendicular with the water surface not at an angle.

The key is in Stern lift and balance. Let Smart Tabs and lift the stern and control the ride.

As you can see from this animation, the tabs retract intuitively in response to changing conditions. Uniquely, the Smart Tabs actuator resistance can be adjusted so there's no danger of pushing the bow into the water with too much Stern lift. Both the port and starboard tabs react independently from one another to keep the boat level at all cruising speeds eliminating porpoising.

Prop slip is reduced. Prop efficiency increased and your fuel economy is improved automatically.

If you're familiar with riding a motorcycle you know that in order to turn corners especially at high speeds, the bike will lean in the direction of the turn. The same can happen when turning your boat to port or starboard. As you can see, with Smart Tabs installed the left tab deploys slightly anchoring the turn to port and the right tab remains horizontal.

The same is true in a starboard turn. The right tab deploys and the left remains horizontal. Smart Tabs again respond to the boat's condition to maintain a smooth and level ride.

The intuitive nature of Smart Tabs operates similarly when tracking through wakes, waves or chop. Let's say you enter a wave at a 45 degree angle to starboard, the port Smart Tabs will deploy and the starboard tab will remain horizontal. As you exit the wave, the starboard tab will deploy and the port retracts to keep you level. With Smart Tabs, you can travel through waves and wakes without having to steer the boat in order to stay on course.

boat saver
by Valdare from SAN Jose, California on June 20, 2017
saved a boat from the bone yard. ok so the boat: 88 bayliner capri bowrider, 14 foot long, 50 hp force outboard. problem would not plane with 3 people on board unless someone walked forward to shift weight. installed trim tabs, planes easily and quickly, even with 2 adults, and 2 9 yearolds, and packed full of camping gear. I'm running them at the number 1 position, with an 11 1/2 pitch prop. also picked up 1 or 2 mph. very satisfied. and yes you can install them even if you have the swim platform molded into the hull. great product.

by Jackie from Paris, Tennessee on November 02, 2015
The smart tabs do everything the ad says they do. Best purchase I,ve made all year. The SX9510-40X Went on a 16 ft. Cherokee deep V alum. boat with a 75 hp merc. I carry alot of weight in the boat. The tabs eliminated my port list, porpoising is all but a memory. Talk about getting up on a plane, I,m literaly there on a quarter throttle. Oh, did I mention I thought I had power steering. Hard to think of the boat without them.

Good Product!

This will be my third set of Smart-tabs and the first composite ones I've used. The quality looks to be excellent and they are much lighter than the SS ones with no sharp edges. I wouldn't run any 16-22ft boat for very long without a set.

SX Smart Tabs
by Paul from Bountiful, Utah on August 05, 2015
5 star rating, easy to install and did what they said they would. My boat with 5 adults and 2 kids would not get up on plane even after running full throttle for 1 to 2 minutes, smart tabs put the boat on plane within 15 to 20 seconds, boat tracks better as well. I love them and will recommend them to my friends. I was going to install the hydraulic trim tabs (that I already had) but now I'm glad I didn't, I don't have to adjust anything, don't have to fiddle with switches while I should be paying attention to other boaters or obstacles. As far as them being "Factory Blemish" I can not see anything that makes them "blems" they look good and function even better. I love them. Thanks

Incredible
by Stephen from South Williamsport, Pennsylvania on August 27, 2014
I bought a new Stingray 208LR with a 4.3 MPI in April of this year. I love the boat design and features but had 2 frustrating issues. First was bow rise out of the hole. Even with some people sitting in the bow, the rise was excessive. Second issue was trim. If you touched the trim button, you instantly started to porpose . I purchased Nauticus SX smart tabs with 80# actuators. Once I got by having to drill 20 holes in a new boat, they installed in less than an hour. The change this product made in my boat is incredible. I am instantly on plane with hole shots. I can now trim the boat to meet any water condition. Lastly, my WOT GPS speed is 57.8 MPH WITH A 14.25 x 23 prop. Thank you Nauticus. Steve PA

Best money I ever spent on my boat
by Jeff from Ventura, California on July 28, 2014
I could not believe how much of a difference these made immediately on my boat. The boat now planes almost instantly and it is drastically easier to keep my 19' Stingray at the right speed for my daughters to ski. No longer fighting the porpoising or the constant speed fluctuations. Best $100 I EVER spent on my boat.

Review for "Factory Blemish" SX Smart Tabs For Boat Length 18' - 22' FT and 150-240 HP -
by a Customer on March 31, 2009
All looks in excellent condition. I read something about removing half the pressure in the two shock absorbers for a better operation. I wouldn't do that unless it was in the instructions however there is nothing stated about doing anything to make them work properly. So are the two shock absorbers suppose to compress by hand? They don't seem to move at all. Thanks, Bob.

More work to install, negligible benefits compared to hydrofil
by Keith from Port Alberni, British Columbia on July 28, 2013
I have a small 13' aluminum hull shallow-vee RIB with a 35hp 3-cylinder Evinrude that I wanted to see if I could reduce the porpoising and wave handling. I purchased the smallest one using the selector tool as I have relatively small motor and very light boat. As I didn't want any stainless hardware reacting with the aluminum hull below the water line I mounted these to large aluminum plates (very stiff) and installed the retracting kit as well. I removed the Attwood Hydro-Stabilizer (bolt on hydrofoil to the anti-ventilation plate) and fixed up the empty bolt holes as directed. After installing (which took awhile as I wanted everything to be square/sealed/etc) I went through testing the five different settings on the Smart Tabs with each of the five different trim settings I have on the engine. Unfortunately with no setting was I able to reduce the porpoising over the hydrofoil alone, and even with the plates on minimum (or retracted) and the engine fully tucked in, I always have significant ventilation issues in corners without the hydrofoil. For getting to fishing holes it's not so important but cruising or water sports I can see it being quite significant. My time to plane is slightly higher, but I can hold plane at about 13mph vs 15mph. Efficiency isn't noticeable over 2 tanks (100L) but my top speed seems to be slightly less (1-2mph). They are always in contact with the water so I would imagine they have more drag at high speed than a hydrofoil that lifts out and runs dry at high speed. It seems like more work with both installing (which required me to move my transducer, speed and temperature sensor) and limits my mounting for an electric trolling motor. Also, I should be retracting them with putting it on the trailer and it's more likely to wear down if the seals go. I do see issues with the hydrofoil as well (damage to the anti-ventilation plate, holes in the engine to mount, force on the motor/transom which I personally think is negligible compared to the weight of the motor) but overall so far they seem better. I will try a larger anti-ventilation plate later. I could see them being beneficial on stern-heavy deep-vee boats that squat and have issues getting on plane, but for the small light boat I have, I don't think they're the best solution.

Trim Tabs Solved My Problem
by Jeff from Dublin, Georgia on June 08, 2016
I purchased a used 2010 Bass Tracker Pro 170 TX and had a problem with the bow riding high at slow speeds, even with a passenger in the front seat. Trimming the motor had no effect. I installed Trim Tabs after comparing them to hydrofoils. Problem solved, even with no passenger in the front! I also have more control when making tight turns at full throttle. I highly recommend this product. They are economical and easy to install, took me about an hour.

Great difference
by Steve from Berlin, Connecticut on July 14, 2015
Put these on my 14' Edgewater because the boat ran too bow high and after planing off would fall off plane at too low a speed. Now the boat handles better at low speed and the boat gets on plane at 300-400 rpm lower and can stay there. No more mushing take offs with the bow pointing to the sky. Love them!!

by Gordon from Canton, Michigan on June 27, 2015
I put them on our 94 boston whaler rage 14, what a difference, the boat plans out in half the time and it keeps the bow from bouncing all the time! The bow still bounces a little in a chop but basically is eliminated in smooth water where as before it was very bouncy .

Works very well, buy one size smaller than recomended if your boat handles well.
by Perry from Brainerd, Minnesota on June 16, 2015
I added these to my 1998 alumacraft tournement pro 175 with a 75hp tiller and I am very happy with the results. My motivation was to get on plane faster with less trimming needed on the motor. Prior to adding the tabs the bow would rise on takeoff to the point that you could not see over the bow even with the motor fully trimmed. Now the boat is able to plane without too much bow rise even with the motor trimmed out. With the motor fully trimmed in there is absolutely no bow rise and the boat planes twice as fast as before. It feels like you have 30 more HP for the first 5 seconds. Other benefits are the boat is able to plane down to 16 mph now and I am able to cruise comfortably at 20 mph when searching for fish. Top speed went from 34 to 33 mph, but effective cruising speed at 2/3 throttle went from 26 to 28 mph. I have not tried adjusting the shock position. I also purchase one size smaller than recommended on the advice of other fishermen and glad I did. No real downsides.

Perform as advertised
by Daniel from Port Orange, Florida on April 27, 2015
These tabs do exactly what they are advertised to do. On my boat there is absolutely no bow rise and am on a plane immediately. The problem I was having is since my boat had the maximum horspower allowed (75 HP) it would lean to the left from the torque. I was able to correct that by adjusting the maximum amount of pressure on the left tab and the minimum amount on the right tab. A very inexpensive way to solve my Problem.

by Alkesh from Columbia, South Carolina on July 09, 2013
The tabs installed in about 25 minutes for me. Put up some masking tape, drilled holes, put in the silicone and screwed everything in. Couldn't have been any simpler. I put them on my Byliner 175 which does not have a flat transom. But a quick call to Nauticus and they shipped me some special brackets to use instead of the included ones, free of charge. Great service! Lastly, it rides much smoother and gets out of the hole must faster as well. Worth the money.

Incredible!
by Lance from Newaygo, Michigan on April 23, 2012
I have a 16' Alumaweld Express 16' aluminum style bass boat. I converted my outboard to a jet drive to steelhead fish on our local river. After that, I could not get up on step fast enough to even take it near the river. My local jet boat guy gave me several options including float pods, a bigger 2 stroke instead of the 4 stroke I have (added low end torque) and so on, but the cheapest option was at least $1300. After the trim tabs, everything has improved dramatically. The boat gets up on step in a hurry, the tracking is awesome, no porpoising or chiming ever. When I was researching these another user made the comment that all boats should come with these, I have to agree to an extent. I put myself in a pickle and Nauticus got me out for a low price in comparison to my other options. Thank you!

SX Smart Tabs
by Thomas from Edgewater, Florida on September 17, 2011
Best money I have spent on this boat. It's a 17' Sailfish (polar type, square front) with an 8' beam, 60hp Evinrude. With the Smart Tabs, this baby jumps out of the water, and is great on top end. I think I can almost walk as fast as this boat will stay on plane in slow speed. Great product, highly recommended!

Another Succes Story
by Jim from Linn, Missouri on June 24, 2011
G-3 1652SC Jon Boat, 50HP 2 Cycle Yamaha Outboard with Power Trim I don’t ever see reviews of the Smart Tab SX’s on an aluminum jon boat so here goes. My son and I just purchased this boat and it was so bad at porpoising and bouncing that you could barely ride in it unless you only traveled at half throttle. It didn’t seem to matter how the motor was trimmed as it only changed the problem instead of fixing it. An email to G3 and they only referred me to my local dealer. Both friends and the local boat dealer suggested either a whale tail on the motor or installing wedges under the motor mount to get more trim. Neither of these options appealed to me and then I read about these Smart Tab SX’s. Installation only took about a half hour and off to the river we went to try them out. Right off the trailer and a little throttle for the turn around to go and pick up my son I immediately noticed a big difference. The boat leveled off almost right away without even letting off the throttle. I picked up my son (I am well over 300 lbs. and my son is tipping the scale a little over 200 lbs.) and we both sat in the rear seat. We took off at full throttle and the boat immediately leveled off with no porpoising or bouncing, just a little chatter when we hit waves from other boats. I now turned over the helm to my son and he put the boat through its paces. I sat on the bow and it didn’t seem to make much difference as the boat leveled off only slightly faster. Back to the rear seat (more comfortable) and my son pushed the throttle forward and done a series of U-turns. Before the Smart Tab’s the propeller would come out of the water, now it continuously makes contact with little or no loss of power. I also checked the speed using a GPS and maybe one MPH increase in speed but I really wasn’t expecting any significant increase on a boat and motor this size. All I have to say is WOW. What a difference Smart Tab SX’s have made. They accomplished everything I was hoping for and more. I would suggest to everyone to install these on your boat and find out what you’ve been missing. (I am also going to suggest to my local dealer to start selling these and forget the whale tails)

I will never own another boat without these installed before I pick it up. Installation was easy, but I was nervous about drilling holes below the water line. They sealed well and don't leak at all. The boat almost jumps out of the water on plane now and it improved the steering tremendously. It took a little getting used to but now I love it. Buy these. You won't be sorry.

Just idling away from the boat ramp the boat tracked straight and when I opened it up it was on plane in less than 3 seconds! It was a little breezy on the lake that day but it cut through the chop like butter! These trim tabs make my boat exponentially more fun to drive!

Was better than a hydrofoil on FourWinns 170 Freedom
by Timothy from Birchwood, Tennessee on June 28, 2016
I like the tabs so far. Getting up on plane is just as fast as with a hydrofoil, and there's no porpoising with more people in the boat like I had with the hydrofoil. Boat stays way more level. Motor trim is way more effective now. I'm still adjusting .. need to try a lighter setting to see if I can improve top end without effecting how fast I get on plane .. Good product and worth the reasonable price.

Incredible
by Philip from Fort Worth, Texas on August 21, 2015
I have had this boat for years and finally can enjoy running wide open across the lake without worrying so much about rough water. Getting on plane is also instant. Also corrects so well for port list from prop torque. Will never own a boat again without them! I have a 2009 Tahoe Q4SS 18' bow rider with mercruiser 135, 60lb tabs. They are set two notches further out on the port side.

Great Tabs
by David from Morehead City, North Carolina on June 17, 2015
I bought some automatic tabs for a boat last year that was under powered. After installing them, the boat proformed as if it was powered with a much larger motor. My most recent purchase of the Smart Tabs was for a boat with enough power but one I wanted to plane at a slower speed and it worked. This saves fuel and provides a better ride especially for a boat with a low degree of deadrise in choppy water. No fuss because they work automatically. You can adjust them to provide the angle of rise you desire in your boat and forget about them. I am using these on a 1784 Tidewater Skiff.

Really improved how my boat gets on plane and a lot more stable at top speed. Using on a 79" fiber form tri hull with 90 mercury. Left a huge smile on my face with a full speed turn with how smooth and stable it felt. Easy to install and worth the money!!!

SMART TABS SX9510-60BL
by Lewis-Smith from Webb, Alabama on May 27, 2015
I put these on a 2007 stingray 185ls. This boat was bad about porpoising and would not plane unless I had the motor trimmed all the way down. After putting the smart tabs sx on the boat the boat quit porpoising and the boat will plane very quickly without having to trim all the way down. It also stopped the bow wandering when going slow. I can now stay on plane at slow speeds without having to stand up to see over the windshield. I talked to the guy at nauticus and he said it would stop all the things that the boat was doing and he was right. The boat now drives like a cadillac. Tom from WEBB, ALABAMA

by Richard from Menomonie, Wisconsin on May 02, 2015
These took very little time to install and improve the handling of my boat. I have a heavier 4 stoke on the boat which caused porposing and they instantly stopped it. Was able to put a higher pitch prop on the motor which also get me better fuel mileage. Stays on plane easily. I would recommend this item. Rick

Installed these on a 1994 searay 200 5.0 cuddy and wish i had of put them on sooner. The boat gets on plane very quick with 1/2 the throttle it took before with very little bow rise. Will hold plane alot slower. It doesnt wander back and fourth in no-wake zones now. The boat always liked to lean to the port side on plane and now it rides level. It handles waves alot better. Before it would ride up and pound on larger waves where now it cuts through them. I was concidering selling my boat for a larger one but after installing these i have decided to keep the boat.

Smart Tabs... I think I love you!
by Adam from Dixmont, Maine on February 05, 2014
I have a 1995 Starcraft Islander 191v that I've owned for three years. It is a great boat for fishing, tubing, and family outings but the high bow rise, porpoising, and listing is really getting on my nerves and making it uncomfortable for my family. I did some research about trim tabs and found out that is what I needed since my engine is aft as well as my gas tank. I went to my boat shop and those douches wanted over $1,000 for electic/hyrdo trim tabs with install. I don't love the boat that much. After weeks of research I found the Smart Tabs SX. I purchased a pair and installed them myself in about 40 minutes for a total of $129.00.. Easy install, great instructions and a quality product. I can't wait to try them out this spring.

Game changer
by Joseph from Naples, New York on August 06, 2013
I installed these on my 1990 Galaxy 19 ft cuddy. The boat has a small (2.3 L) Volvo Penta that could barely get on plane and could not plane below about 20 mph (this made it tough to pull little ones on a tube without traumatizing them). Since installing the Smart Tabs, the boat now planes far more easily. Bow lift is greatly reduced and the boat can plane easily at 15 mph (I've pulled a tube at speeds as low as 12 mph). The boat also handles choppy water much better with considerably less porpoising. There does not appear to be a noticeable change in top speed one way or the other. Installation was pretty easy. I had to remove a nonfunctional transducer to make space for the tabs, which was no big deal. I've tried different props, engine tunings, steering and engine trim settings and nothing has improved the performance of the boat nearly as much as these Smart Tabs. Highly recommended.

You should buy this.
by Rory from Lynnwood, Washington on July 20, 2013
Put these on my Trophy 1802 a month ago, but wanted to spend sufficient time with them before I posted a review. Planing was dramatically improved -- much faster to plane with way less bow rise. Plus I can keep it on plane at much lower speeds. Tracking is amazing. At cruise I can sit back in the seat with no hands on the wheel (even in light chop). At slow speed I can move about the boat to deal with docking bumpers and lines and the boat tracks straight ahead on her own. Pounding in 2' to 3' seas was also greatly reduced. The last really awesome thing they've done for me was to make just enough of a hole in front of my kicker that I can now leave it tilted down at cruise (with the scag an inch out of the water). Not only is that easier on the bracket, but it also means I don't have to remove the EZ-Steer anymore. After getting them adjusted properly (#2 position) my top end went from 42 mph to 44 mph. Hopefully that extra efficiency will help the gph a bit.

JON BOAT 18' 60HP 4 stroke

That solution solve my porpoising problem on my 18' JON BOAT with heavy 60HP 4 Stroke. No need to put weight in front of the boat like some tell me. Moving Fuel Thank and Battery in the front was not for me a good solution. Moving the outboard higher or lower on the transom don't solve my problem. That Trim tab work just very well. Drastic change. Excuse for bad English I'm french -)

What a difference

Installed these on my 09 Tahoe 215 in about an hour probably could be done faster but there's some gut wrenching aspect about drilling into your boat that was hard to overcome. Support walked me through any installation questions and even provided pictures of my boat to ensure my success. After installation the smart tabs worked as advertised, my boat planes alot faster and I don't have to stand up to look over my hull on take off. THe drift I had a lower speeds is less also. I recommend these!

Good Results
by John from Prince George, Virginia on November 25, 2012
This is the 2nd set of Smart Tabs SX that I've installed. They were installed on two very different types of boats. But, both sets have returned similar results. This set was installed on an 18ft, Center Console, saltwater boat with 90HP outboard. The boat performed well before the install, and even better after. Hole shot was quicker and much "flatter". WOT speed, as measured by GPS, also increased by 3 knots. But, where I notice the greatest difference is being able to stay on plane at lower speeds. Another important difference is how easy it is to steer a straight course at trolling speeds. Before, she would wander a lot. I did do something on both installs that I would suggest to anyone installing these. I replaced the nylon bolts and clevis pins with stainless bolts and fiberlock nuts that I bought at Lowes. Previous reviews I had read about the Smart Tab SX product indicated that the nylon hardware would sometimes fail. So rather than take the chance, I went ahead and replaced all the nylon hardware with stainless. So far, I have not experienced a failure of any kind with either set. All things considered, my boat is now a much more pleasant one to drive. I can easily recommend Smart Tab SXs to anyone looking for basic, set and forget, trim tab performance.

by Chris from Shady Side, Maryland on October 02, 2012
The mounting brackets for the tabs are too wide and will not mount flush anywhere on my transome. Unfortunately, I ordered them on-line and was not aware of this until after I opened the package. Perhaps some dimensional data on the bracket size would have helped prior to sale.

Best Bang for Your Boating Buck
by a Customer on October 27, 2010
I have a very stern-heavy boat -- Starcraft 15-foot Deck Boat -- with 400-lb motor, 200-lb operator, battery and gas all at or near the stern. Before installing these tabs, getting up on a plane was a laborious process requiring lots of power. Now it's a breeze. Time to plane is faster rpm to plane is lower rpm to maintain plane is lower. The ride is enormously improved -- chop is smoothed out and porpoising eliminated. Nauticus claims 15% faster acceleration, 50% less bow lift, 10% more speed and 11% better fuel economy. Except for fuel economy, which I didn't measure, all these claims were accurate. Installation instructions are clear and simple. I can't recommend these tabs too strongly. They are the biggest bang for my boating buck that I have spent in a long time.

These tabs work unbelievably. I installed them on a Chaparral 185 SST and now the boat rides like a 24 footer! It glides over 2'-4' chop at 48 M.P.H. without chime walking or bouncing! Crossing boat wake is no longer an issue, it will plane out at 15-18 M.P.H. at quarter throttle and I picked up a couple M.P.H.. What's not to love? Kudos to Nauticus for a great product!

Why aren't these standard equipment?!? They are awesome!
by Christopher from Corcoran, Minnesota on July 23, 2016
This has been the single best money ever spent on my boat. I was skeptical that an inexpensive product like this would do much. I have a 19-foot 1987 Hurricane Deck boat with a 4.3L I/O engine. The boat would point at the sky at anything over idle and short of 3/4 throttle. It only took me about 20 minutes to install these (only tools needed were a drill, pliers, screwdriver, and RTV sealant. I was amazed at the results. The boat planes out almost immediately, and the climb has been reduced by 75%. The boat also handles in the turns much better. Too early to tell if the claims about better fuel economy will hold up, but if so these will pay for themselves in no time. Even if they do nothing to improve fuel economy I am thrilled with them. It makes the boat much more enjoyable.

Nearly flipped my boat
by Joe from Hudson, Florida on July 14, 2016
I have an 18 manatee center console 115 hp Suzuki 4 stroke. I had a slight list to port side and decided to use a set of these vs the controllable types I was used to. Adjusting the tabs a couple of times the port one is extended fully and the starboard side is retracted fully at this point. The list has not resolved and today when testing it with the new configuration fully extended now on port side and fully retracted on starboard side, I gave it some throttle up to about 3500 RPM, went to SLIGHTLY turn to stay in channel and the boat started to lose control and nearly flipped over. Scared the out of the 2 people on board with me. Not sure what the issue is. I reviewed the installation instructions again and we did do it exactly as shown. I think I am going to take the boat out tomorrow and put a set of controllable tabs on before someone gets hurts! Never had a boat behave so badly before.

Smart Tabs SX for Stingray 21 LR WOW!
by Dominick from Venice, Florida on May 28, 2016
Put the trim tabs (Nauticus Smart Tabs SX) on the boat on Monday. Took it out today for a test run with the new tabs and auto settings. WOW! Like a different boat. Less fuel consumption, smoother ride, instant plane with little to no bow rise, no bow bounce in rough water, faster, and turns like it has bow thrusters. Best money spent in a long time. . It was the smoothest ride I have had in a boat in years despite the light chop and 2 to 3 ft swells. Could not get GP off the helm. She loved it and took it up to a bit over 50mph. Speed Deamon she is, and that is why I do not let her drive the Vette very often.

These tabs made a huge difference on my boat! It gets on plane at a lower speed and bow rise upon takeoff is pretty much eliminated. Also, I no longer get chine walk at high speeds. I ordered the 80 pound actuators (per the selection info from Nauticus), but they are too much for my boat. Nauticus is replacing them at no cost with 60 pound actuators. (They also were extremely helpful as I was installing them, responding to email questions very quickly and sending me photos to help with the installation.) Great product and outstanding customer support! A very good value for the money.

Works fantastic on my Chaparral
by a Customer from Ridgewood, New Jersey on April 21, 2011
I have a 2005 21' Chaparral and wanted to get a little more performance out of the boat on the hole shot. I did some research and found some amazing claims on the iboats' forums. I took the plunge and ordered these Smart Tab. The really do work as advertised and I could not be more pleased. Install was pretty simple and they look OEM. I would recommend to my friends. Wayne

Manufacturer's Response:
by a Customer on April 08, 2011

During the manufacturing process we found that there were design issues with the SX9510 series of Smart Tabs in early production. This was primarily noticed on boats with deep V type hulls, V8 power, and boats capable of speeds in excess of 55 mph. In all cases we provided replacements (of new design) to the consumer at no charge.

The specific change since the introduction are the Tab plate hinge bosses, tab plate ribs, Hinge plate bosses, and replacement of the Spread and Lock hinge pins with nylon bolts and lock nuts. Since these changes have been made, the rate of warrantee claims has been reduced to less than 2% which includes product returns of all types. In some cases the returned product was never used.

In summery, we are confident that all of the issues with the SX series have been resolved. We are always looking to improve product quality and consumer satisfaction. We guarantee our products 100% or your money back

Best Regards,

John E. DeAgro

Faizel - Purchased the wrong model
by John from Brecksville, Ohio on March 19, 2013
We are disappointed that you purchased the wrong model for your boat and did not have a good experience. We (at Nauticus) do our best to insure that our customers are satisfied, including our written Performance Guaranty (money back). As a matter of information we have a toll free customer service number (800-233-0194) which works in Canada as well. We do not use computerized responses to customer service calls – we answer the phone when it rings (during business hours. Under the section on our web site titled Install Instructions we have posted a large assortment of installed photos which may have helped as well. In any case we would be happy to assist you at any time.

Not universal, no response to emails
by Faizal from Calgary, Alberta on June 05, 2012
The transom on my boat is set at an angle, so the actuators are not long enough to reach the transom, although there is not mention of this on the website. The nauticus website says you can convert smart tabs into pro-trollers with the extra attachment, but it does not work with these. These tabs have a stop of 25 degrees, which prevents them from shifing into the trolling position. This was the main reason I bought the tabs. Another $50 down the drain. Nauticus did not respond to several of my emails which made a bad situation worse. Installation will cost me AT LEAST 3-4 times the cost of the smart tabs because of the transom angle. Buyer beware!

Q:
Will these work on a 1994 Four Winns 180 SE?
A:
We will need to know your motor information as well. You can follow our guide from the following link: http://www.iboats.com/Nauticus-Trim-Tabs/dm/view_id.239769

Q:
My boat is a Stingray 21 LR with the Mercruiser 5.0 Alpha 1. The transom is curved to the outboard because of the built in swim platforms. I want to mount to the outboard but this would put the tabs at an angle to the mic point of the transom and outdrive. is this OK?
A:
According to Nauticus you will actually use the SX9510-80, not the 10512-90. You will have to mount them further in and there is no loss of performance. We can give examples by calling us at the number at the top of the page.

Q:
Will your tabs work on a tunnel/well boat? Motor is mounted forward of the stern in a "well"?
A:
Nautiqus confirms that they will work for a tunnel hull boat.

Unfortunately, we do not offer technical assistance and do not have the sources to determine whether this will work for your application or not. A:
9.5" x 10" plates.

Q:
How difficult is it to remove the tab for trailering? Where these mount they would interfere with the transom tie downs.?
A:
Well these are installed 3-5" in from the edge of transom. They are permanently installed so it is not recommended to remove the tab for trailering. So you will need to take into account where these would be installed and adjust transom tie downs accordingly.

Q:
This is for the pair dose the blemis hurt performance?
A:
Yes it is sold in pairs. The blemishes do not hurt performance, otherwise the manufacturer would not offer it.

Q:
Would this be the size for a 1994 SeaSwirl Spyder openbow 188 5.0L (225hp)?
