The company did not actually start out making outboards. It first made 2-stroke inboard engines starting in 1903. It expanded to make marine and aircraft engines in V4, V6, V8, and V12. Eventually it stopped production on these products because of torrential rainfall and a tornado that wiped out the drawings and materials. The owners eventually moved headquarter to Illinois and started working on building outboard motors. It rapidly become the highest selling outboard manufacturer in the country even beating out Evinrude. By 1930 the Great Depression had hit, and the company fell onto some hard times. In 1935 Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) took over ownership putting Johnson and Evinrude under the same umbrella. It continued to build durable motors that you may still see out on the water from the 1960’s like the Sea Horse engine. Eventually Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) took over ownership in 2001 and by 2007 had phased out the Johnson line and sold new motors exclusively under the Evinrude name.
