  • Honda 200 hp BF2004-cyl. 4-Stroke DOHC, Gap .044

NGK spark plugs are designed to operate over a much wider heat range than ordinary plugs. Each NGK features high alumina ceramics for better heat transfer and electrical insulation. Patented triple gasket sealing process eliminates the possibility of combustion gas leakage. * They are resistant to carbon buildup and pre-ignition * Longer insulator nose prevents fouling and misfiring * Solid copper core and nickel-tipped electrode provide a longer plug life.

Video Transcript

What is a fouled spark plug? A spark plug is considered fouled when the insulator nose at the firing tip becomes coated with a foreign substance such a fuel, oil or carbon. This coating makes it easier for the voltage to foul along the insulator nose, leak back down into the metal shell and ground out rather than bridging the gap and firing normally.

Many factors contribute to the spark plug fouling, the air fuel ration may be too rich as a result of incorrect carborator adjustment or a poorly performing fuel injection system. A clogged air intake or dirty air filter can also contribute to a rich condition. One piston rings or a valve seals may allow too much oil to leak into the combustion chamber leading to oil fouling.

The ignition system may not be performing properly, short trips prolonged idling or continuous low speed driving may keep the spark plug from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Using too cool of a spark plug can lead to the same problem. Fuel, oil and carbon fouling can all be the result of different causes but once the spark plug is fouled, it will now provide adequate voltage to the firing tip and that cylinder will not fire properly.

In many cases, the spark plug cannot be cleaned sufficiently for a certain normal operation. Therefore it is recommended that a plug be replaced once it has fouled. For more information please visit us at NGKSparkplugs.com.
