What is the long red wire for - is that a resister wire - where is it used ?

It is the power lead that connects to the 12V source (battery).

I have the old starter in my hand, how do I determine if I need a new one that is clockwise or counterclockwise?
A:
Point the starter away from you oi straight up to see drive gear: If the beveled edge is on the right (slanting from right to left), it has a clockwise or CW rotation. If the beveled edge is on the left (slanting from left to right), it has a counter clockwise or CCW rotation.
