The Shoremaster Side winder power unit is designed to fit both Shoremaster vertical and cantilever boat lifts. This module shows the assembly and installation process for the Sidewinder. Wear protective clothing, footwear, protective eyewear, and use gloves when assembling the sidewinder power unit.

If there is a shaft seal present on the whisper winch it would be visible here. Remove it before assembling the sidewinder power unit. This scene shows the shaft seal removed. Failure to remove the seal will prevent the break from activating.

Mount the sidewinder with the lift rack in the down position. Next install the sidewinder whisper winch adapter plate. Using 3/4 by 1 inch bolts and flat washers mount the adapter plate, bolting it using the lowest hole. The second bolt holds the sidewinder mount bracket, as does the third, mounting to the midpoint and the highest hole in the assembly. Tighten these bolts.

Have an assistant hold the power unit cover or hang it on the bottom lip of the bracket. Install the motor on the bracket using 7/16 inch head bolts. Mount with the motor drain holes in the down position. Do not tighten these bolts completely at this time. Push the small gear with the key all the way onto the motor shaft. Tighten the set screws securely with a 1/8” Allen wrench.

Next, thread the large gear all the way onto the winch wheel shaft. The gear should be in contact with the break pad. Put the 5/16 x 1 1/14 inch bolt with the cup washer on the winch shaft until there is between a 1/16” and 1/8” gap between the gear and the cup washer.

Put the chain on both sprockets and set the master link. You may want to remove your gloves momentarily to place and set the link pins.

Slide the motor away from the winch to adjust the slack in the chain to just and 1/8”. Then tighten the motor bolts. Slide the cover onto the bracket until the holds line up with the slots in the cover. Secure with 4 small tech screws. Two on the top and two on the bottom of the housing cover using a 5/16” wrench.

Check with a certified electrician before supplying power to the unit. If 12volt power is used, make certain the battery is the proper size and fully charged.

Once power is supplied, test the winch using the key. Testing the unit will confirm which direction the winch moves, up or down, according to which way the key is turned. This allows you to install the appropriate stickers to the sidewinder cover.

In the event of motor failure, be sure power to the unit is off and remove the black cap on the housing cover. Use the supplied crank handle to turn the small gear and operate the lift. The Shoremaster Sidewinder power unit makes operating the Shoremaster boat lift virtually effortless.
