This varnish is highly regarded for its reliable service, versatile application, outstanding gloss retention, and tough yet flexible durability. It has long been recommended for the highest quality work, with outstanding results and all-around durability. A combination of phenolic and alkyd resins blended with tung and linseed oils provide excellent performance. It's warm, light amber hue will enhance the rich, classic bright work appearance.

1015 Captain's Varnish - Excellent product, easy to work with, holds up great.
by John from Port Orange, Florida on March 22, 2017
Used product to varnish a decorative teak mast after full removal of old varnish coats. This was a complete repeat of strip and varnish job from 15 years ago when I did the same, using 1015 Captain's Varnish. The varnish held up well over that long stretch of years with only a once and sometimes twice yearly light sanding and added coat of varnish. Original chemical strip/sand/varnish was completed with about 10 coats, applied and smoothed out with a quality china bristle brush. After about 10 years, the quality of the varnish finish was deteriorating from re-coating under challenging conditions and I skipped a year now and again too. After 15 years, the build up just began to break, blister, and flake. The teak was fully exposed to intense sun and freezing weather along the northern SC coast the entire time. U/V resistance by this varnish was excellent. For those reasons, it was an easy decision to choose Captain's Varnish 1015 again. This time stripping was done using a heat gun, followed by sanding to a 220 finish. First two coats were 50/50 with Pettit brushing thinner, sanded between coats. Then 8 more coats at full strength, applied via foam roller and smoothed out using a good foam pad brush. All coats allowed to dry one to three days between application and sanding/re-coating. I am looking forward to another 10+ years of service from Captain's Varnish 1015. My boat is now located in sunny Daytona Beach, FL. John S.

Not just for boats !!
by Don or Maurice from Waxahachie, Texas on June 27, 2016
I have built two wooden dashboards in the past...a 1918 Oldsmobile touring car and a 1958 King Midget (roadster) and used this varnish on both. I customized the King Midget like a "woody" station wagon, and also used the varnish for all of the that wood. I am now building a mahogany dash for a 1953 MG TD replicar. I only trust the Z-Spar Captain's Varnish because the wood on these cars will be exposed to the hot sun, the same as a boat. I also did the wooden spoke wheels for the '18 Oldsmobile with this varnish. I took the King Midget to fourteen car shows and came home with thirteen trophies. I'm sure the finish on the wooden parts had to play a role in the judges decisions in winning these trophies. .
